New Designers 2016

Already the experience of New Designers, the ultimate graduate show, seems a long time ago.

But it was only a couple of weeks ago that the seven students from Somerset College set off for London with our final collections flying up the M5 in the back of an Ark van!

We all arrived around lunchtime and headed straight for the Business Design Centre in Islington to start setting up our stand. T12, our home for the next five days.

By the end of the Tuesday the cavernous, empty hall looked like this - full of excited, if exhausted students and the most inspiring work.

Day One - Highlights

Wednesday is a long day at New Designers with judges and press visits from 9 o'clock until two followed by the opening of the show to the public, award announcements, VIP preview evening with Absolut vodka cocktails and for the mighty: an after-show party until 1am. There is little time to rest or eat during the day so 3000 students drinking cocktails on empty stomachs was an interesting experience!

However, I had the pleasure of meeting the team from W'innovate and several other lovely people from different companies who showed interest in our work which made the long day worth while.

Needless to say that after twelve hours on our feet we were all sat around the kitchen table at our Airbnb flat in Highbury clutching cups of tea and bowls of soup.

Day Two

Thursday at New Designers was a more relaxed affair as we were able to share time on the stand allowing us each to have time off to relax, explore the other work on display, attend talks from industry professionals and eat!

I caught up with Rachael Taylor and the team from Make It In Design who were situated conveniently close to the cafe!  Always in need of coffee, I saw quite a lot of them!!

I am definitely going to take part in Summer School this year to keep those creative vibes going and am excited to hear that this year sees the introduction of Winter School too. Yay!

I also caught up with the lovely Annabel Tempest another Make It In Design alumni from Somerset and we Instagrammed and Tweeted our way through Rachael's talk making us look either incredibly rude or scary, stalking fans!  ( Rachael had asked Annabel to do the Social Media stuff so it was ok)

Anyway, Thursday was a fun day with lots of inspiring talks, more exploration of the other stands, a wander around Islington and at the end of the day we all piled into Wahaca in Islington for supper after the show - always a treat!
