Here in the lovely county, where I have lived all my life, we are celebrating our first Somerset Day. May 11th was chosen as it is the birthday of Alfred the Great, King of Wessex. Famous for fighting off the Danes and burning cakes.
The day is proposed to celebrate all that is great about our home county from the countryside and towns to the people and businesses that call it home.
To mark the occasion Wellington based, luxury fabric manufacturers Fox Brothers launched a countywide competition to design a new cloth for their archives. As I live locally I was keen to take part and gathered some images from around the area for my inspiration. I was especially drawn to the blue lias rocks at Kilve beach and the colour and texture of the withies out on the Levels.
Using these colours and my newfound addiction for plaid I set about creating a design which I thought would work well for both clothing as well as interiors and accessories.
To my surprise and delight I received a call this morning from Fox Bros to say that my design had won!! I am so excited and can’t wait to see the fabric made up. I will actually be given a piece and will now be looking around for ideas on what I can make with it. The cloth will also enter the Fox Bros archives alongside over 250 years of history.
What a great start to the week.
Happy Somerset Day!
