This week on the Art & Business of Surface Pattern Design course we have been looking at Trade Shows. ( If you would like details of Module 3 or any of the other courses available just click the image.)

I have visited a few in the UK and always come away with a mixture of feeling inspired, overwhelmed and intimidated by the wealth of talent out there.  Before I plunge in to tackle one of these wonderful shows myself I feel I need to investigate them first hand to assess whether I am prepared to exhibit, with all the work, stress and costs that would no doubt ensue.

Indigo Brussels is top of my list as I keep hearing great things about it and it’s one I have not yet visited so plans are afoot to get myself over there in September. It’s at the end of the first week and I will still be on summer break – yes really! – so it might be a good way of easing me into my final year.

Of the shows in the UK, I will be visiting New Designers in Islington in June as students from Somerset College will be there in force. I went last year and it was fantastic, with so much to see from new graduates from across the country.

At the end of September I will be heading over to Syon Park in West London for Decorex and then the Old Truman Brewery in Shoreditch for Tent and Super Brands .

There is an open invitation to submit designs for a tote bag for London Design Festival – details can be found on the Tent website why not have a go?

Submission deadline is June 27th so plenty of time to get your design in.  No fee to enter, no prize – just the glory and joy of seeing hundreds of people walking around with your design slung jauntily over their shoulder – yay!

If you visit the shows, look out for me. I’ll be the one trying not to look like a student……fake it until you make it!
